Fixing the Reading Crisis in Children - As a Design Problem
Kids books are stuck in the Encyclopedia Age
Did you know the most popular kids’ encyclopedias date back to the 1990s? At over 20 years old, they look outdated. Back then, encyclopedias were massive and bulky, designed to pack comprehensive knowledge into multiple printed volumes. With paper as the only medium, they relied on lengthy text and illustrations to cover wide-ranging topics, resulting in heavy, unwieldy books. Kids today find devices far more engaging. I tackled this as a design challenge to rethink how we deliver knowledge to young readers.
A Highly Differentiated Product:
I learnt everything about print design, publishing etc and completely redesigned these books ground up. I created individual SKUs, put them out on Amazon and gained traction through quality and targeted ads. When I had enough conviction on the product I launched Box Sets to finally make profitable margins.

I hacked my way through building this company with a suite of AI tools and contract workers around the world. Parents and Educators love the product and the sets been consistently rated 5 star on Amazon. Abracadabra Books also received a lot of accolades in popular news outlets
The future
I believe physical books will always continue to be a part of children's lives. More parents are now more aware of giving screen-free time to their kids than ever before. The future of publishing and books is now more exciting than ever with the advent of AI. Google's recent Story Book product has solved a lot of the issues with creating fiction books which is a dream come true for every parent out there.
